House Democratic Leader Rick Miera will not seek re-election

House Majority Leader Rick Miera, an Albuquerque Democrat, announced today he will not seek a 13th term in the House of Representatives.

Miera, who previously served as chairman of the House Education Committee before moving into a leadership position last year, said in a statement he feels ready to pass the torch.

“I am grateful to my constituents who have placed their trust in me, and during the remainder of my term I will continue to look out for their best interests,” said Miera, who represents a House district that encompasses downtown Albuquerque.

House Speaker Ken Martinez, D-Grants, described Miera as a “stalwart” supporter of public education and a legislative leader.

Miera becomes the fourth House member to confirm they will not be seeking re-election this year.

The others are Rep. Tom Taylor, R-Farmington, the former House GOP leader; Rep. Henry “Kiki” Saavedra, D-Albuquerque, the chairman of the House Appropriations and Finance Committee; and Rep. Nate Cote, D-Organ.
