Pitcher Walker leads Lobos

Josh Walker allowed five hits, four of them singles, as the New Mexico baseball team shut out Missouri State 7-0 on Sunday in the first game of a doubleheader at Lobo Field.

UNM (4-3-1) and Northern Illinois tied 3-3 in 10 innings in the second game. The Huskies (0-6-1) had a plane to catch. It was UNM’s first tie since Feb. 22, 2004 when they played Northwestern.

Walker bounced back from a disappointing outing in his first start. Last Sunday the preseason All-American gave up nine runs in four innings in a 17-2 loss to San Diego.

The senior from Rio Rancho did not walk a batter and struck out three. He needed just 95 pitches, 68 for strikes, to get through the game.

“I got the ball down,” Walker said. “Every day is a learning experience. I learned from the last game. The past doesn’t matter now that we’re in the present. I put my heart and soul with the team and just pitched hard.”
