Taos as the Third World

SANTA FE, N.M. — People looking to do good while they travel often go to places like Haiti, Mexico, Guatemala or — Taos, N.M.?

In a direct slap to the cliche of Taos as a haven for artists, spiritual seekers and movie stars like Julia Roberts, the town is looking for “voluntourists” between Aug. 10-20. Habitat for Humanity in Taos is inviting people to come make adobe bricks as part of their vacation. Or, heck, anytime from March through November might work.

The organization is working on its 29th home built by bricks made by volunteers. And almost all of them come from outside the state, a news release tells us.

In Taos County, the average home costs almost $300,000 — a price out of reach for almost 90 percent of local residents.

So if anyone wants to help put up a home for people who already live in Taos, go to taoshabitat.org or contact volunteer coordinator Susan Nuss at 575-758-7827.
