Bill to ease nurse licensing is signed

FARMINGTON – Gov. Susana Martinez on Thursday signed legislation aimed at bolstering New Mexico’s health care workforce.

The legislation, Senate Bill 119, was approved by lawmakers during the just-completed 30-day legislative session. It was one of several health care workforce initiatives backed by the Republican governor.

Specifically, the legislation will expedite the issuing of nursing licenses to qualified applicants and could help New Mexico recruit out-of-state nurses, Martinez said.

“Any nurse practitioner who wants to come to our beautiful state and help us meet the dire health care needs of our communities will be licensed in five days or less under this legislation,” the governor said in a Thursday statement.

The law will take effect July 1.
