Bloomfield councilor defends City Hall monument

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A former Bloomfield city councilor who proposed and erected a 10 Commandments monument in front of City Hall testified today that he raised money through two Bloomfield churches for the $3,940 monument.

Kevin Mauzy also said he sought legal advise from the Alliance Defending Freedom around the time he erected the monument in July 2011 in an effort to avoid legal challenges to the project.

The nonprofit Alliance Defending Freedom is representing the city of Bloomfield against a federal lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union alleging the granite monument violates constitutional protections of religious freedom.
