Signs of spring

SANTA FE, N.M. — With snow pounding the nation from the Midwest to the Northeast, it seems a little insensitive to celebrate the clear beginnings of spring in northern New Mexico (besides the sky-hazing juniper pollen).

But, yes, if the territorial and courting songs of the local birds in the past couple of weeks haven’t alerted you, the very beginnings of some blooms on trees (we think this one is an ornamental plum, but will be happy to be corrected by anyone more knowledgeable) and bushes such as forsythia should send a clear signal.

Yet, if only those folks shivering in the continuing grip of winter want to send a little bit of their moisture our way, we’d be happy to trade a few blossoms for it.
