Bueno begins returning green chile to stores

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A month after Bueno Foods voluntarily recalled its frozen green chile, the company is once again selling the popular pepper product.

The Albuquerque company notified the Journal it would begin restocking store shelves today with its “new retail green chile,” one Bueno says it is voluntarily processing under a more stringent protocol.

Customers should look for Bueno green chile products marked with a “new” sticker.

On Feb. 11, Bueno announced a voluntary recall of its frozen green chile product after listeria bacteria was identified in an uncooked sample. The callback included every tub it processed in 2013.

“We are thrilled to have our New Mexico grown green chile products back on shelves and back in restaurants,” company President Jacqueline Baca said in a news release. “We have millions of pounds of our own green chile inventory that we are further processing with FDA’s guidance and we have enough to carry our customers through until the new season begins.”

Bueno said all retail green chile products will be back in stock over the next month. It started resupplying restaurants and food-service customers a few weeks ago.

At the time of the recall, Bueno said a test of an uncooked sample showed the bacterium listeria monocytogenes but that the recalled products should be safe if cooked to label specifications. Testing on samples of the green chile that were cooked per the instructions did not show listeria, the company said.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration classified the matter as a “Class II” recall, which is considered a midlevel hazard on the FDA’s three-tier scale. Class II recalls are for products that “might cause a temporary health problem, or pose only a slight threat of a serious nature,” according to the FDA website.

There have been no recent cases of listeria in New Mexico, according to the New Mexico Department of Health.

Bueno describes its new green chile product as “very similar to Bueno Foods’ own Autumn Roast with a darker home-roasted appearance and a more concentrated, intensified flavor.”

The company says the new product requires less cooking time.
