MMA: UFC coming to town

The UFC is coming to Albuquerque.

On June 7, the UFC announced on Tuesday, former lightweight champion Benson Henderson will headline a Fight Night card at Tingley Coliseum.

Tickets are scheduled to go on sale April 18.

Henderson (20-3) is scheduled to face Dagestan’s Rustam Khabilov in the main event. Khabilov (17-1) trains at Albuquerque’s Jackson-Winkeljohn Mixed Martial Arts.

The full card will be announced later.

Henderson is the former WEC and UFC lightweight champion. The Glendale, Ariz.-based fighter won the UFC title by defeating Frankie Edgar in Feb. 2012. He lost the title to Anthony Pettis last August but bounced back, defeating Josh Thomson by split decision in January.

Khabilov, a professional MMA fighter since 2007, is 3-0 in UFC competition. His most recent outing was a victory by unanimous decision over Jorge Masvidal in November on Fight Night 31.

A UFC card in Albuquerque is an event long discussed and hoped for, given the sport’s popularity here and Jackson-Winkeljohn fighters’ presence on UFC shows throughout the organization’s rapid growth.
