The Argentine promoter of boxer Lucas Matthysse is pouring agua fria on reports that the Argentine junior welterweight has agreed to fight Albuquerque’s Fidel Maldonado Jr. on May 3 in Las Vegas, Nev.
The link provided here is for our Spanish-speaking readers. but promoter Mario Arano is telling the Argentine media that he categorically denies Matthyse will fight Maldonado — or anyone — on the Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Marcos Maidana undercard at the MGM Grand.
Arano said Matthysse instead will fight on an April 26 card in Carson, Calif., against an opponent yet to be named.
Fidel Maldonado Sr., his son’s trainer and co-manager, told the Journal on Tuesday that online reports quoting him about the possibility of a Matthysse fight were accurate. But, he said, he never intended his remarks to be published because he had emphasized that no contract had been signed.
“I hope this doesn’t kill our fight,” the elder Maldonado said.
Does any of this mean, no way, no how will Matthysse fight Maldonado on May 3 or on some other date? Of course not.
Hey, it’s the boxing business.
