ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The big Little Anita’s restaurant on San Mateo is no more.
Lawrence Gutierrez — who ran the Little Anita’s location under a licensing agreement with the New Mexican food chain — closed the 200-seat restaurant and bar at 5210 San Mateo NE earlier this month.
Gutierrez only had operated the location under the Little Anita’s name for about seven months. He previously ran Prickly Pear Bar & Grill in the same space for about a year.
Gutierrez said business “was just OK” and that competition for customers in the area was fierce, especially since Sadie’s opened a new location near San Mateo and Academy last year.
“There are a ton of restaurants (in that corridor),” he said. “What initially happened to us, we were doing OK, and (then) Sadie’s came in there and kind of cut into some of our business.”
Gutierrez said he’s currently looking for a tenant to sublease the 6,500-square-foot site.
