Spirit of generosity needs to be revived

January, February and March are humdrum months. The holidays for 2013 are over … and the generous spirit that most people had during the Christmas season is normally forgotten at this time of the year.

But the needy are still there and their children still get hungry. This takes a toll on places like Storehouse West as needy people still require assistance, but the donations are not meeting the requirements. When people arrive for assistance for their families, the shelves are poorly stocked and, at times, there is not enough food items to provide for them.

There are many wealthy people in this country who get involved with feeding the children in other depressed countries, but here in Rio Rancho we need to take care of our own.

According to its website, Storehouse West is a nonprofit, community-supported agency that provides perishable and nonperishable food, children’s clothing, and hygiene supplies to families, seniors and individuals in need, depending upon household size and the ages of children.

In 2013, Storehouse West distributed over 360,000 meals to feed 13,900 people, the site says.

Storehouse West’s Kids Clothes Closet … distributes gently used children’s clothing, and new underwear and socks to children through middle school age, according to the website. Donations to purchase new clothing and shoes are welcome, the site says.
