Sunland peanut plant sale closes

sunlandALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The former Sunland Inc. peanut butter plant in Portales, mothballed since the company filed for bankruptcy court protection in October, is under new ownership.

Golden Boy Foods, which has a “nut butter” division, took possession of the plant on Tuesday after closing on the $26 million purchase, said Tom Walker, lawyer for the court-appointed trustee in charge of Sunland’s bankruptcy estate.

A subsidiary of Vancouver, Can.-based Post Private Brands Group, Golden Boy acquired the plant through an auction in Bankruptcy Court in Albuquerque that was part of Sunland’s bankruptcy proceedings. Golden Boy has not yet commented on the acquisition or issued a timeline on the plant’s reopening.
