Health care is not health insurance

WITH ALL the hoopla over Obamacare, one would think that health insurance and health care are the same thing. They are not.

Health care is something that every individual needs and uses to one degree or another. Health insurance is an industry that does three things. It negotiates health care volume discounts, manages the money transfer and rakes off a pretty profit for its efforts.

The solution to unaffordable health care is not more unaffordable health insurance. The Obamacare health insurance mandate succeeds only in lining the pockets of insurance companies and driving up costs to individuals.

If we really want to reduce cost, we need to increase the supply of health care to offset increasing demand.

I believe Obamacare should be repealed and replaced with federal, state and local initiatives that increase the number of nurses, physician assistants, primary care physicians, urgent care centers, walk-in clinics and hospitals.

In addition, we should evaluate current health care standards and practices, and modify where appropriate to allow greater authority and responsibility at the nurse and physician assistant level.
