Voters pick mayor, councilor Tuesday

The municipal runoff election is Tuesday and Rio Rancho residents have several polling locations where they can vote for a new mayor and, if they live in city council District 5, a new councilor.

The runoff is necessary because no candidate in those two races received more than half of the votes cast during the city’s regular election on March 4.

The candidates facing each are Gregg Hull and Mike Williams for mayor and Shelby Smith and Tom Buckner for District 5 city councilor.

Voting convenience center locations will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at four locations:

  • Rio Rancho City Hall, 3200 Civic Center Circle NE;
  • Meadowlark Senior Center, 4330 Meadowlark Lane;
  • Mountain View Middle School, 4101 Montreal Loop NE; and
  • Soul Rio Community Church, 2003 Southern Blvd. SE.

Voters can check on Tuesday for up-to-the-minute data that shows how many people are in line to vote at each polling location.

Shortly after the polls close, the city clerk will post unofficial results on the city’s website,

The clerk and his staff will canvass and certify the election results on Friday.

The clerk will still accept a completed absentee ballot delivered by mail, in person by the voter casting the absentee ballot, by a member of the voter’s immediate family, or by a caregiver for the voter, as long as it arrives by 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

Early voting at City Hall ended at 5 p.m. Friday.

New Mexico does not allow same-day voter registration. The city will allow only residents over the age of 18 who were registered on or before March 18 to vote in the runoff.

City ordinance requires residents to present photo identification if they wish to vote in municipal elections.

Poll workers on Tuesday will ask voters for their names. To receive a ballot, voters must then present a photo identification card.

Free, city-issued voter photo identification is available in the clerk’s office at City Hall during regular business hours.
