It’s True: H&M confirms its first Albuquerque store

ScreenShot002Yep, it’s true.

After months of hints — and suspiciously boarded up space at the state’s largest shopping mall — the Swedish clothing retailer H&M on Wednesday confirmed its plans to open a store at Coronado Center.

H&M says the new store will open this fall. It will be 23,000 square feet and stock apparel for men, women and children – including plus-size and maternity fashions.

Rumors long have swirled that the popular global clothing chain was coming to the Duke City, and things became increasingly curious after Coronado Center’s recent remodeling renderings included signs for H&M. The center then proceeded to board up four storefronts near the mall’s south entrance.

The addition of H&M was hailed by mall management on Wednesday.

“Our goal is to exceed our customers’ expectations by offering a wide variety of sought-after retail options, while providing the best shopping and dining experiences possible at Coronado Center,” Senior General Manager Randy Sanchez said in a written statement. “The excitement is already building around H&M’s arrival.”

H&M’s Albuquerque store is part of a much larger expansion plan. H&M’s most recent annual report indicates the chain plans a net addition of 375 new stores this year.

H&M’s first U.S. store opened in New York 13 years ago and there are now 311 locations around the U.S., according to a news release.
