EDWARD MCDONNELL: Make plans for city’s first mini ‘Renaissance Faire’

Brainstorming. Creative vision and output.

The Rio Rancho Arts Commission was established to make the arts an integral part of the city. As a part of this effort, one of the events that the Commission has put together is the “Knights and Dragons Faire” — Rio Rancho’s first mini-Renaissance Faire!

Imagine perusing your favorite tome and glancing over your shoulder to confront a knight in shining armor. You could do just that, at the “Knights and Dragons Faire.”

The Arts Commission, in collaboration with the City’s Loma Colorado Library staff, has several activities planned to take place at the Loma Colorado Library throughout the month of August.

The first in this series of events will start on Aug. 2 where participants will have a chance to create their very own dragon at the “Make a Dragon” program geared for children ages 8-11 years old.

Beautiful medieval music is planned for Aug. 11 at the Loma Colorado Library. Scheduled for Aug. 16 at the Loma Colorado Library, between 12 and 1 p.m. is an event to make your own hat or crown for your Renaissance costume. Become the Lady or Knight of your own creative design!

From 1-2 p.m., there will be a live demo of bravery and action — a fight/spar exhibition of knights — and again on Aug. 17 at the Sunday is Funday event at the Rio Rancho High School field.

The Arts Commission encourages everyone to attend all the events that are planned throughout the month of August. All are free to the public.

This “mini” Renaissance Faire event is the beginning of what the commission hopes will turn into an annual event that continues to grow each year it takes place.

The Arts Commission meets at 6 p.m the second Thursday of every month at the Rio Rancho City Hall.
