“I came back (Tuesday afternoon) and just talked a little bit, just overall, without getting specific about anything,” he said after Tuesday’s practice.. “They understand the severity of this. They also also understand Crusoe is a kid that’s done a lot of good things around here and worked extremely hard. It was a lot of emotions, and I’m the exact same way.”

Of his own reaction, Davie said, “I feel a lot of things. In some ways I feel responsible. In some ways, I feel angry. In some ways, I feel sad.”

Davie declined to talk about specifics of his talk with the players regarding Gongbay’s arrest.

“That’s why they call it a team meeting,” he said.”… A team really, in essence, is a family, and just like in any family situation, my message is kept to that family.”

Lobos sophomore wide receiver Dameon Gamblin has tweeted in support of Gongbay, writing,” bad things can happen to good people. We gonna be there for my man Crusoe. He gone beat this!”

Davie said he understood the sentiment but would encourage his players to keep their comments in-house.

“I think that’s a natural reaction,” Davie said. “I think everybody is hoping this gets resolved in a positive way. … (But) I’m certainly going to address that. I talked to (the players Monday night) about everything we say needs to be said in our meeting room, together as a team.”

Davie declined to talk about the team’s running-back situation without Gongbay, who projected as the Lobos’ starting running back in the fall. Gongbay has been suspended indefinitely in light of the charges against him.

“I think it would be inappropriate for me right now to take this right  to the football end of it.,” he said. “… There are some young people’s lives that potentially can be changed forever over this.”
