Silver City paper to close after 79 years

SILVER CITY – After nearly 79 years in business, the family-owned Silver City Daily Press announced Friday that it will publish its final edition on Monday.

Publisher Tina Ely made the announcement with a posting on the newspaper’s website.

In a telephone interview, the tearful Ely said it was a decision many years in the making as ad revenues fell and two papers struggled to compete for those dollars.

“No matter what we would do, the community would not buy the advertising to support a paper,” she said.

Ely said the newspaper has 17 employees.

Founded in 1896 as the weekly Silver City Independent, the paper was purchased by Col. Clyde Ely in 1934 and converted to the Silver City Daily Press in June 1934. The newspaper was passed down to Ely’s son, Bill Ely.

At the time of Bill’s death, his wife, Betty, became the publisher. Tina Ely was later named co-publisher and became the owner after the death of her mother.

About 15 years ago, a competitor came to town, the Silver City Sun-News.

“My dad told me if a big chain came in and undercut us, we would last about nine years, and we lasted 15,” Ely said. “So we beat the odds.”

The Silver City Sun-News is now part of the Texas-New Mexico Newspapers Partnership, which is part of MediaNews Group.

Ely said she has no hard feelings for her competitor.

“It’s not like when they first came in,” she said. “They are struggling just like we are.”
