Sandoval fire chief bans open burning

High winds that present potentially hazardous conditions have prompted Sandoval County Fire Chief James Maxon to impose a ban on open burning in the unincorporated areas of the county.

The county will no longer be issuing burn permits of any kind. The ban will remain in effect until the fire department determines that conditions have improved enough to allow burning, Maxon said, in a release.

Cooking and heating devices that use kerosene, white gas or propane as fuel may be used if there is fire protection nearby and a defensible space around the device.

The restrictions will be enforced by the Sandoval County Fire Marshal and the Sheriff’s Office. Anyone found violating the ban will be subject to arrest and penalties up to and including a $300 fine and 90 days in jail.

Report illegal burning by calling 505-891-7226.
