HERON LAKE: Fishing for lake trout was fair for small trout early in the week and then we started getting some larger ones to bite later in the week. Best fishing with tubes and cut bait, 18 to 25 feet deep. Reminder, you must use meat from non-game fish (carp or suckers for your cut bait). Fishing from shore has been slow with few people fishing. Best bet is to fish with salmon eggs or PowerBait for rainbow trout and cut bait for lakers. Fishing over the weekend was mostly impossible due to rain snow and high winds. Don Wolfley, Heron Lake Guide Service

SHADY LAKES: There have been seven hefty 20-plus inch trout caught as of late, with baits varying from flies, PowerBait, and worms. Shady Lakes restocked today with 1,500 pounds of rainbow trout. The Easy Catch Trout Pond received 1,200 pounds with an 11-inch average size. The remaining 300 pounds went to the Big Trout Pond with a 16-inch average. Five 20-inch-plus were included. The bass appear to be finished with their spring spawning and reported activity has been strong on wacky worms, jigs, and even some plastic frogs fishing off the surface. Bluegill are beginning to spawn now and are biting predominantly on worms and flies. Jan Phillips, director

SANDIA LAKES: The freshly stocked rainbow trout have been very active with anglers reporting excellent catch rates this week. Most activity on lures, but many fly rigs and baits have also shown success. Enter our pocket tournament on Saturday. For more tournament information call the lake store at 505-771-5190.
