Man accused of trying to steal poker chips at casino

SANTA FE, N.M. — Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested a man at the Buffalo Thunder Resort in Pojoaque on Saturday after he was allegedly trying to steal poker chips from gamblers as they played.

The man first told deputies his name was Michael Sanchez but he was recognized by security as being John Baca because of a recent trespass, a sheriff’s report said. Deputies learned Baca, 54, of Santa Fe, had an active warrant for his arrest and he was arrested and booked into the county jail on criminal trespass and concealing identity charges, the report said.

Casino security told deputies “they were not entirely sure if the male actually was successful at taking any poker chips from any guest” because the guest had already left, said the report. Baca had been served with a notice on Sept. 21, 2013 which barred him from the property, the report said.
