Singles won’t begin until tonight. The girls go at 6:30, the boys at 7:30 and 8. Girls doubles in 5A, 4A and 1A-3A will play first-round matches at 3:30 this afternoon. The boys follow at 5 p.m.

  • State team action runs Friday and Saturday at Jerry Cline, Albuquerque Academy and the Sierra Vista courts on the West Side. The championship matches are Saturday at Academy (1A-3A boys and girls) and at Jerry Cline (4A and 5A boys and girls).

Gavin Lynch of New Mexico Military Institute (1A-3A), Alex Dunning of Academy (4A) and Michael Tran of La Cueva are seeded No. 1 in singles.

Tran, who recently signed with UNM, is the 5A defending champion. If there are threats to his throne, they seem likely to come from within his own district, with No. 2 Dane Paulsen of Manzano or No. 3 Achyut Warrier of Eldorado.

Warren Fulgenzi of Santa Fe and Mason Mellott of the Chargers are seeded behind Dunning in 4A. Will Katzman of Bosque School is seeded No. 2 in 1A-3A.

When the team action commences Friday, everyone in 5A will be trying to solve No. 1 undefeated La Cueva. Eldorado, the No. 2 seed, lost 9-0 to the Bears a couple of weeks ago.

Academy is seeded No. 1 in 4A, with NMMI at No. 1 in 1A-3A. Both won state last year.

Two of the three defending state champs in singles – Chloe Lee of Albuquerque High and Juliana Guerin of Robertson – are back and seeded No. 1. But 4A will have a new winner as Academy’s Melissa Pick, injured with tendinitis in her left wrist, is competing in doubles only. Pick won state in 2012 and 2013 – as did Lee and Guerin.

Paris Corley of Grants lost to Pick in straight sets in last year’s 4A final. Corley is the No. 1 seed this week. Academy’s Dani Apodaca is No. 2.

La Cueva’s Sarianna Kuuttila is the No. 2 seed in 5A behind Lee. Lee beat Kuuttila in straight sets two weeks ago at the Metro Championships.

Bosque, Farmington and Mayfield are the No. 1 team seeds. Academy and La Cueva are No. 2 seeds in their divisions.
