Businesses without employees increase

RIO RANCHO, N.M. — The number of businesses without paid employees in Sandoval County increased by 1.5 percent from 2011 to 2012, according to nonemployer statistics released last month by the U.S. Census Bureau.

Receipts went up 1.8 percent. The values and numbers of nonemployers in the county grew from $256 million for 7,469 firms in 2011 to $261 million for 7,587 firms.

A plurality of those firms, 17 percent, provided professional, scientific and technical services in 2012. Other sectors comprising 10 percent or more of firms included retail trade and other services (except public administration).

Transportation and warehousing firms were the most profitable nonemployer sector in the county, averaging $67,487 per firm. Other sectors with a high average for receipts per firm were real estate and rental and leasing at $61,513 and wholesale trade at $56,358.

The statistics for businesses without paid employees come from the Internal Revenue Service. Only businesses with annual receipts of $1,000 or more have to file federal tax returns.
