Politics Notebook: Governor to host Christie, Cheney in NM

Gov. Susana Martinez is planning to host visits soon from some big-name Republicans.

Martinez on Thursday confirmed in a fundraising email for her re-election campaign that New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie will make a stop in New Mexico on May 29. Martinez is planning fundraisers with Christie in Carlsbad and Artesia, according to her campaign.

Martinez offered supporters the chance to participate in one of the Christie events by making a $10 contribution to her campaign and entering a sweepstakes.

Christie often is mentioned as a possible presidential candidate in 2016 but has drawn criticism for allegedly retaliating against a political opponent by using bridge construction to create traffic jams. Christie has said he had no knowledge of the alleged retaliation.

Martinez last fall visited Christie in New Jersey to aid his re-election effort.

Martinez also plans to host former Vice President Dick Cheney at a fundraiser in Las Cruces on June 14, according to the Martinez campaign. That event is an invitation-only fundraiser.

The Clinton events, being hosted in Albuquerque on Tuesday and in Santa Fe on Wednesday will feature Craig Smith, former political director to President Bill Clinton. Prominent New Mexico Democrats also are on the card, including Santa Fe Mayor Javier Gonzales and former Albuquerque Mayor Martin Chávez.

Earlier this year, Hillary Clinton visited Albuquerque for a small fundraiser that benefited the family’s Clinton Foundation.
