ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Planning a tour can be somewhat difficult for Brian Moss. But with patience, he can make it happen.
“The summer is our busy time because we are on tour nonstop,” he says during a recent interview. “This time of year, planning is crazy because we’re all finishing up school.”
Moss is a member of the jam rock band Spafford, which is based in Prescott, Ariz.
The band was started in 2008 by Moss and Jordan Fairless. It then added Nick Tkachyk and Andrew Johnson, and released its first studio album in May 2012.
Moss says it’s been about a year since the band has been in Albuquerque and the members were impressed with the turnout for the show because it was on a Wednesday.
This time around, Spafford will perform for two nights at Low Spirits Bar & Stage.
“We’re looking forward to playing some weekend shows,” he says. “We do have some new music that is ready to go and hope that the fans enjoy what we have.”
Moss says while the quartet gears up for its tour, he’s been hard at work getting the band’s new vehicle ready for the road. The band has been through two vehicles already and this time the guys are using a bus.
“I’ve been looking up on YouTube how to remove seats and install bunks,” he says. “This entire thing is a DIY project from every aspect. Everything is done by us. From booking to recording and touring, it’s all Spafford.”
Moss, who’s also a guitar teacher, says he has to pay attention to inspiration when it strikes.
“I’ve been guilty of teaching a student and then I’ll hear a riff in my head,” he says. “Then I’ll ask the student to hold up my phone so I can record it. It’s something that I really pay attention to. I never know when inspiration will strike.”
