MYSTERY AUTHOR SPEAKS: Judith Van Giesen, author of 13 mystery novels, will speak at Croak and Dagger, the Albuquerque Chapter of Sisters in Crime, at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 27. The event will be in the James Joseph Dwyer Memorial Police Substation, 12700 Montgomery NE, one block east of Tramway. The program is free and open to the public.
AT BOOKWORKS: Albuquerque poet Richard Vargas will present new work in a Silver Conch Poetry Series collection at 3 today at Bookworks.
Peter Heller will talk about and sign his book “The Painter” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 27, at the bookstore. It is described as “a stunning, savage novel of art and violence, love and grief.”
Jeffe Kennedy and Darynda Jones will launch new novels at Bookworks at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 28. Kennedy will be present with his “The Twelve Kingdoms,” and Jones will be on hand with “Sixth Grave on the Edge.”
Gary Stewart Chorre presents poetry from his book “A Modern Luddite” and poet Ann Marie Pearson also will read at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 29.

IN SANTA FE: Collected Works Bookstore and Coffee House will present chef and author Deborah Madison and Los Angeles-based writer, photographer and contributor to “Eat: Los Angles” Joseph Shuldiner at an event at 5 today at The Real Butcher Shop, 907 W. Alameda, Santa Fe. Madison is the author of “The New Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone” and Shuldiner is the author of “Pure Vegan: 70 Recipes for Beautiful Meals and Clean Living.”
