AROUND THE STATE
ISLETA LAKES: Both SUNRISE and TURTLE lakes have been doing very well for trout with the cool temperatures. However, as water temperatures rise, trout activity will decrease. Catfish activity will increase as water temperatures rise. Best baits for catfish are worms, garlic chicken liver and stink bait. We are planning our annual tagged catfish derby in June. Carlos Trujillo, Isleta Lakes & RV Park
SHADY LAKES: In preparation for the Memorial Day weekend, Shady Lakes restocked with 1,800 pounds of rainbow trout on Saturday. Trout in the East Catch Pond are biting actively predominantly on worms and salmon eggs with an average size of 11 inches. The Big Trout Pond’s activity is moderate with fish averaging 16 to 18 inches. Best success has been with trout lures, worms and hatchery formula PowerBait. As of Tuesday, the highest number of reported bass caught and released is eight with the action coming off swim baits and Texas-rigged plastic worms. The spawn appears to be over for bass but the bluegill are continuing. The bluegill are liking worms and flies, as usual. Jan Phillips, director
HERON LAKE: Fishing is pretty slow for everything. Kokanee salmon have not yet started to school real well. A few small lake trout (14 to 18 inches) have been caught from the shore below the La Laja and Ridge Rock campgrounds. Water is very low and murky. Water temperature is in the low 50s. A Heron Lake fishing clinic will be held on Saturday. Call the lake visitors center in the morning at 575-588-7470 for further information. Don Wolfley, Heron Lake Guide Service
SANDIA LAKES: We will be open Monday. Fishing for rainbow trout is excellent. Anglers are reporting catching very nice five fish limits and the trout are ranging from 11-16 inches. Larger fish are still being caught frequently. Water conditions are excellent for trout. Jason Wiebenga, Wildcat Environmental Services
