Despite rain, nearby forests in high fire danger

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Despite recent rains, the Forest Service said grasses, logs and other fuels in forests north of Albuquerque are dry and can carry fire.

The Forest Service placed Level 1 Fire Restrictions for the Santa Fe National Forest and Valles Caldera National Preserve. The restrictions will start Thursday and be in place for the rest of the year unless they are rescinded, according to a news release.

That means campfires, charcoal frills and stove fires are prohibited except in established fire pits in developed campsites and picnic areas. Smoking is only allowed in enclosed vehicles, buildings or developed recreations sites and no fireworks are allowed, according to the release.
