Tip of the Week

This year alone, there will be over 34,254 great golf tips to help your game through many sources. Of course, the Albuquerque Journal will offer the top golf tips that will put many golf teachers out of work in the near future.

But I’ve seen many golfers, including myself, allow range balls to hypnotize us into thinking the more we keep swinging, something magical will happen. It often doesn’t. Apply some tips I’ve learned: keep composed, concentrate, build confidence and then eventually trust your swing on the range or golf course.



While learning a great tip or new motion, consider the following:

1. Call a time out after three foul balls on the range and practice for three minutes away from range balls while swinging through broken tees.

2. Practice that new golf tip at 30 percent energy/effort until you get a good feeling. If you can hit 7-of-10 good shots, then push the envelope and hit balls at 60 percent. After another 7-of-10 good range balls, you can jump to 90 percent.

If you start to struggle, go back to swinging at the energy level your swing felt in sync while working on your golf tip. And don’t be surprised if you never go past what you “feel” is 60 percent.

3. Finally, when you go play your next round of golf, be disciplined and take the extra club. Swing at what you “feel” is around 50 percent and watch how quickly you can get into a nice tempo while staying in sync.
