Fake Exterminator Accused of Burglarizing Las Cruces Home

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A man posing as a pest exterminator has been arrested after he was allegedly seen breaking into a home and taking two flat-panel television sets, the Las Cruces Police Department said in a news release.

Jesse Kevin Romero, 34, of Las Cruces, was being held at the Dona Ana County Detention Center without bond facing one count each of residential burglary, larceny over $500, criminal damage to property over $1,000 and possession of burglary tools, according to the release.

Police said Romero appeared to be casing prospective homes on Tuesday, driving through residential areas and randomly stopping at homes where he would knock on doors carrying a pesticide sprayer, or walk around homes looking into windows, the release said.

A witness told police that around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday that Romero knocked on a front door of a home on Windridge Circle, then was seen a short time later leaving the residence carrying the two television sets.

Police officers stopped Romero’s vehicle a few minutes later and allegedly located the two TVs stolen from the Windridge home as well as a DVD player that had been taken from the residence, according to the release.
