Six months ago, the drag entertainer wasn’t known very well outside of the New Orleans and New York City circuit.
Fast forward and Del Rio is becoming a household name – thanks in part to winning the sixth season of “RuPaul’s Drag Race.”
“That’s the power of television,” she says. “It’s overwhelming because it’s happened to me. I’m glad I’m older now and won the contest. I’m aware of who I am now. I don’t get upset if someone doesn’t like me, that’s not a problem. If I were 20, I would probably waste this opportunity.”
Del Rio is headed to the Duke City to put on a comedy show, which is surely going to be full of quick wit and a sharp tongue. She will perform on Saturday, June 21 at Sidewinders.
Paula Cole is a force of nature when it comes to performing. The Grammy Award winner has had some huge singles and her most recent album, “Raven,” has been out for a year. She will perform at the Rio Grande Zoo tonight.
La Santa Cecilia has been slowly making a name for itself over the past couple years. The young Los Angeles-based band performs cumbias, norteño music and is all brought together by Marisol Hernandez. The band will perform at the National Hispanic Cultural Center on Sunday, June 22.
There’s plenty more in this week’s issue. Look further to find pieces on hip-hop artist Sage Francis, Western singer Michael Martin Murphey, The Wheeler Brothers and 311. Of course you can also find a helping of our movie and restaurant reviews.
