ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Victims of the Las Conchas Fire should guard against unlicensed building contractors who could prey on unsuspecting homeowners, according to a warning from the state Regulation and Licensing Department.
About 60 homes and structures were destroyed or damaged in Cochiti Mesa, Cochiti Canyon, Del Norte Canyon and Canyon de Medio Dia.
Superintendent J. Dee Dennis Jr., said in a news release, “We will be sending building inspectors to the affected areas to ensure contractors involved in any rebuilding efforts are properly licensed by our Construction Industries Division.”
Fire victims should ask contractors to show them a valid contractor license and should avoid making any payments until work is completed.
Homeowners can call the department at 1-866-548-3753 or 1-866-829-3841 to report any fraud or unlicensed contractors, or to obtain a list of licensed contractors in their area.
