SANTA FE, N.M. — Trevor Hall took his time – and it paid off.

“I took about a year and a half with this new record,” he says during an interview from Seattle. “By taking some more time, I felt like it reflects who I am as a musician.”

Hall is a singer-songwriter with a reggae, roots and folk influence. His new album is called “Chapter in the Forest,” which is a perfect title considering where he wrote the material.

“I would go to the forests in Maine and Vermont and just lose myself in the area,” he says. “It was important to get back to the basics for me.”

In that span, Hall wrote dozens of songs, many of which made the album.

“It took a while to get the album completed because I kept writing new songs,” he says. “Because I took the time to decompress, it really helped open my mind to new ideas.”

Hall’s new album marks his sixth studio album over the course of 10 years. He says that over time he’s developed his skills as a songwriter.

“I’ve grown a lot and it reflects in my writing,” he says. “This album is an example of that. I was really inspired by my surroundings. I got to know myself again by taking the time off and just listening to what the universe had in store for me.”

Hall is a familiar face to New Mexico audiences, though he admits it’s been a while since he performed in the state.

“Unfortunately, it’s been awhile since we’ve played there,” he says. “I’m always amazed that I don’t have a show there every year. It’s a very spiritual place and I feel at ease there.”

As for a set list, Hall says he doesn’t really put one together.

“If it makes it any easier, I don’t know what I’m going to play tonight,” he says. “It’s always a situation where I just go with how I’m feeling. That seems to work out the best for me. Besides, I’m working with some great musicians that can go in any direction we choose.”
