A Rio Rancho man has been arrested in connection with two recent bank robberies, on on Coors Road in West Side Albuquerque and one in Rio Rancho.

Rio Rancho police and FBI agents arrested Joshua Abeyta, 21, in Rio Rancho on Wednesday and he made his initial appearance in U.S. District Court  in Albuquerque on Thursday.

Abeyta was arrested in connection with a robbery on June 30 at the Bank of Albuquerque inside the Albertson’s supermarket at 4300 Ridgecrest Dr. in Rio Rancho, and the Bank of Albuquerque in an Albertson’s supermarket at 10131 Coors Blvd. in Albuquerque on July 8. The total amount of money involved was about $3,500, according to the criminal complaint.

The arrest came after law enforcement officers received a tip from someone who has seen surveillance camera images of the alleged bank robber on the news. The tip led Rio Rancho police and the FBI to conduct surveillance on a home in the 300 block of Asbury Road in Rio Rancho where records showed Abeyta lived, the complaint said.

It said, law enforcement officers stopped a vehicle that drove away from the house and asked the female driver for permission to search it. Officers found clothing that fit the description of that worn by the robber as captured on bank surveillance cameras. They also found a demand note described to police by one of the tellers involved in the Coors Blvd. bank robbery.
