Santa Fe’s ‘Up in Smoke’ shop goes up in smoke

SANTA FE, N.M. — Dennis Montoya of Española got a call from the alarm company about 10:30 p.m. Sunday saying his son’s new Santa Fe shop called “Up in Smoke” was on fire.

“Somebody torched it,” he said. “It’s pretty much totaled, everything on the inside.” Montoya said it took him 30 minutes to get to the location on Second Street and when he did he saw police cars and firetrucks around the business but the flames had been extinguished.

Santa Fe police have launched an arson investigation but have no suspects, a police report said. The fire is suspicious because emergency responders found the doors to the business were open, said police spokeswoman Celina Espinoza.

Montoya said the business, owned by his son, Jesse, sells pipes and hookahs and had been open only a couple of months. Dennis Montoya said he did not have a dollar value for the damage estimate but thinks the business is insured.
