New York-style Italian deli in the works on West Side

The people behind M’Tucci’s Kitchina restaurant are looking to give Albuquerque’s West Side some additional Italian flavor.

Katie Gardner said she and husband Jeff Spiegel plan to open a New York-style Italian deli a few doors down from M’Tucci’s at Coors and Montaño.

They will fill it with homemade meats and cheeses and other deli staples, and also provide a small seating area for customers who want to sit down and enjoy a sandwich.

“I’m really excited about it. I think it’s going to be unique,” said Gardner, who moved to Albuquerque from New York in 2007. “People (from) New York who have those delis imprinted in their souls, they’ll walk in and feel like they’re transplanted back to Arthur Avenue in the Bronx.”

Gardner said the goal is to open this fall. She said it also will carry the M’Tucci’s name.

Gardner and Spiegel partnered with chef John Haas to open M’Tucci’s Kitchina last year. They previously had owned and operated restaurants in New York City.
