Baik was 1 up through 14 holes before Galloway rallied to win the next three – all with birdies. The rising junior at Cleveland High shot 4-under through her final six holes.
Galloway’s next opponent in the prestigious match-play event will be Fumie “Alice” Jo of China this morning. Jo, 15, is ranked No. 788 among world amateurs. Galloway is No. 2,399.
Galloway defeated Sarah Cho of San Diego 3 and 2 in the Round of 32 early at the Home Course on Thursday. Birdies on 11 and 14 helped give her the edge.
MEN: In Newton, Kan., University of New Mexico senior Gavin Green played his best golf early Thursday against teammate Sam Saunders in the Round of 32 at the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship.
That didn’t bode well for Green’s Round of 16 match later in the day. He lost to Honolulu’s John Oda 2 and 1, falling short of reaching the quarterfinals of the prestigious event.
The two were tied through the first nine holes, but Oda took advantage in the early holes on the back nine to take a three-hole lead that ultimately held up.
It was a battle of teammates in the morning session between Green and Saunders. Green took an early one-hole lead and was able to extend it on the back nine to advance.
Saunders will next play in the Pacific Coast Amateur Championship in Flagstaff from Tuesday to next Friday.
