Witnesses smash window to retrieve baby left in car

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Bystanders smashed the window of a 36-year-old Albuquerque father’s vehicle Tuesday evening to retrieve a crying, sweating baby that witnesses told police was waiting in a hot car for 30 minutes.

The 1-year-old baby’s father, Joshua Grothaus, said the infant was only inside the vehicle for 15 to 20 minutes when he emerged from the health fair down the road on the 700 block of Isleta SW around 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

The baby was evaluated by paramedics, who determined the child was OK. Witnesses told police the child was very red with dry skin, crying and soaked in sweat.

He said he was in a rush to get his wife from the fair but then was unable to find her in the parking lot. His wife then found him in the parking lot, said “she couldn’t believe this” when she noticed her husband did not have the child with her.

Police consulted the National Weather Service and determined that the temperature outside the vehicle was 91 degrees Fahrenheit.

Grothaus was booked on child abandonment charges and booked into the county jail. He posted bond and was released Tuesday.
