ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Kathy Searle had a chance to be married to Michael Rapaport — at least in her new movie, “My Man is a Loser.”
She also got to star alongside John Stamos and Bryan Callen.
“Michael is amazing and such a rock star,” she says. “I learned a lot from him. This was my first lead role and the entire cast made it easier.”
“My Man is a Loser” is a comedy which follows two married guys Marty and Paul, played by Rapaport Callen, who employ their single playboy friend Mike, played by Stamos to help them get their “mojo” back to save their marriages with their wives, Lianne and Liz, played by Searle and Heidi Armbruster.
During the ensuing adventures, things start to backfire leaving the wives to wonder if the new versions of their husbands are worse than the old ones. The film opens nationwide on Friday, July 25 and is also available on video-on-demand.
Searle says the film is a romantic comedy about relationships, friendships and of course, marriages.
“It’s really not a chick flick,” she says. “Everyone can understand where these characters are coming from.”
Searle is also happy to have the film out in theaters.
“We shot it all over New York City,” she says. “The movie comes out two years and 20 days after we wrapped. It did take a long time for it to come out.”
Searle says on the first day she shot on set, it was one of the last scenes of the film.
“We were all sitting there holding hands,” she says. “John Stamos was sitting there and playing guitar. Then I had this surreal moment. Bryan Callan is across from me and John is there and I’m with Michael. It was an awesome moment and one that women would be jealous of.”
Searle’s role in the film is her biggest yet and she felt a little intimidated going into this project.
“I’ve only done smaller independent films,” she says. “These people are all stars. I had to remind myself sometimes that the casting director saw something great in me and that I belonged on the same set with these people.”
Searle is making her way into movies after having some succes in “Baby Mama” with Tina Fey and “Confessions of a Shopaholic” with Isla Fisher.
On Tv, she has been in “Body of Proof,” “Blue Bloods,” “Gossip Girl” and “Lipstick Jungle.”
Searle was born in New Rochelle, N.Y. and developed a love for acting early in her life.
At the age of 12 she began doing commercials and went on to study at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts.
She then went to the Upright Citizens Brigade to hone her comedy skills.
“I’ve always wanted to be in front of an audience,” she says. “It’s the best feeling.”
When Searle isn’t filming a project, she can be found working on a pilot called “Freak Me.”
The comedy series has raised all it’s money via Kickstarter.
“It’s been great to be part of this group,” she says. “The pilot is about working for a phone app which is based in the porn industry. It’s done in a mockumentary style.”
As Searle’s profile begins to rise, she is starting to get more involved in social media.
“I just started Twitter,” she says with a laugh. “Now I have to figure all of this hashtagging stuff out.”
