ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A stay at the Inn of the Mountain Gods does wonders for the soul.

I don’t know if its the crisp mountain air, the endless rows of pines that surround the property or just staring out into the calm lake that makes stress melt away. I can sit outside my room for hours staring out into the beauty of what is the Inn of the Mountain Gods.

I returned to Inn of the Mountain Gods last weekend, not only for the serenity but also for the Halestorm concert being held in its showroom. Frontwoman Lzzy Hale is a powerhouse and the other members of the band are also amazingly talented. Halestorm definitely knows how to put on a rock show.

This was my second rock show at the Inn of the Mountain Gods, and again I was impressed with the overall concert experience there. I have noticed that the Inn of Mountain Gods keeps adding show after show of top rock, country and Latin acts.

Tonight the Eli Young Band takes the stage and later this month it’s Brantley Gilbert on Aug. 29.

In September, Kumbia Kings All Starz and 3 Doors Down will be some great shows to check out.

If you’re attending a show, give yourself some time not only to enjoy the gaming floor but also some of the awesome places to eat at the Inn of the Mountain Gods.

This time around I tried the Gathering of Nations Buffet and left happily stuffed. There is so much to choose from, but I had a craving for Italian and visited the Tuscan Grill where chefs stir up pastas made to order. There are also pizza selections and other ready-made pasta salads and selections to choose from.

But, take a walk around the buffet and you’ll find more food than you can eat in months. There are Asian selections such as various stir-fry treats, egg-drop soup and dumplings as well as American comfort foods such as mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, roast beef and the list goes on. A Mexican cuisine area and a huge salad bar also are worth a visit.

I finished off the meal with a fruit tart, which is one of my favorite desserts. It was the perfect end to a fantastic meal.

I also highly recommend Wendell’s at the Inn of the Mountain Gods, which I visited last April. The food is wonderful, and the view overlooking the lake is breathtaking.

The Inn of the Mountain Gods has some great promotions this month on the casino floor, but on Sundays it offers a great event for families. Every Sunday night through Sept. 1, the inn has live music followed by a movie.

During my stay, I saw children of all ages with their parents outside by the lake enjoying the music of a live band playing some danceable hits from all eras.

Later they moved on to find a place on the lush, grassy lawn adjacent to the lake to watch Disney’s “Frozen” playing on a huge screen under the night sky.

Sundays Under the Stars events are free, and chairs and blankets are allowed. This Sunday, enjoy a performance by the band The Substitutes, and later enjoy Disney’s “The Lion King” on the big screen. Sundays Under the Stars wraps up with an end-of-the-summer fireworks show on Sept. 1.
