Join the sisters of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority at 8 tonight in Kiva Auditorium at the Albuquerque Convention Center for the multimedia presentation “The Enchanted Evening with the Arts: A Tribute to Our Delta Sisters.”

The presentation, produced by local performer Cathryn McGill, will feature both live and videotaped performances. The show is free and open to the public.

Local performers will portray revered singer Leontyne Price and actresses Lena Horne and Ruby Dee, all three of whom achieved international celebrity status. But perhaps the performers’ most prized personal achievement was becoming a part of the lifelong sisterhood of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.

They and other prominent female artists and fellow Delta sorority singers Aretha Franklin and Shirley Cesar and actress Cicely Tyson also will be portrayed. Emerging young star and Albuquerque native Imeh McIver, who just returned from a New York City stint at the Alvin Ailey Professional Summer Intensive, will be performing a tribute to dancer Judith Jamison.

The performance is the premier public event of the Southwest Regional Conference of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, which is taking place in Albuquerque through Monday, Aug. 11, and is hosted by the Albuquerque Alumnae Chapter.

At the conference, Delta sorority members from Texas, New Mexico, Arkansas, Louisiana and Jamaica are gathered in Albuquerque to celebrate another year of extraordinary achievement and success for their sisterhood.

The sorority was founded in 1913 at the historically black Howard University and currently has 250,000 members and 1,000 chapters worldwide. The sorority is a public service organization that focuses on five points: economic development; educational development; international awareness and involvement; physical and mental health; and political awareness and involvement.

The Albuquerque Alumnae Chapter was founded in 1967 and has been very active in the community, including giving out college and high school scholarships and conducting holiday charity drives and community workshops on voter education, breast cancer resources and more.

This year during the conference, the chapter will lead the effort to raise money for and provide personal hygiene items to women in various Albuquerque homeless shelters.

Albuquerque Journal and its reporters are committed to telling the stories of our community.
