ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Albuquerque Mayor Richard Berry traveled to Arizona today to meet with Navajo Nation President Ben Shelly about ways to help homeless Native Americans.
The meeting followed the vicious killings last month of two homeless Navajo men in Albuquerque.
Berry said he and Shelly are forming a task force that will examine ways to break the cycle of homelessness. That includes everything from economic development to housing and help for people struggling with addiction.
Berry said he expects the task force to produce preliminary findings in October, in time to begin seeking funding.
“It was a candid meeting,” the mayor said after returning to Albuquerque. “There’s something for everybody to contribute here.”
