Banana Republic headed to ABQ Uptown

bananarepubliclogoNew Mexico’s only Banana Republic store is about to swap shopping centers.

The men’s and women’s clothing retailer will open a new, 6,966-square-foot location at ABQ Uptown in January, according to representatives of Simon, the company that owns the open-air Uptown area shopping center.

The new store means Banana Republic will leave its longtime home at Coronado Center, a store manager told the Journal on Thursday. The manager said it’s not yet clear when the Coronado shop will shutter.

As you may recall, Banana Republic’s sister brand, Gap, made a similar jump in early 2013. Gap closed both its Coronado and Cottonwood Mall stores in favor of a consolidated location at ABQ Uptown.

Banana Republic will take over the ABQ Uptown space formerly occupied by Coldwater Creek.

“ABQ Uptown is thrilled to welcome Banana Republic to our retail lineup,” B Janecka, ABQ Uptown mall manager, said in a news release.

Banana Republic has been a longtime Coronado tenant, though the shop recently shifted locations within the mall. Its former suite — a high-profile storefront near the mall’s southern entrance — soon will host part of the mall’s new H&M.

Coronado Center General Manager Randy Sanchez said this week that construction is underway on the new H&M and that it should be open by Thanksgiving.
