Editorial: C’mon, stay out of arroyos

You’d think everyone would know better by now.

Each year warnings are issued through just about every medium and in every school: You can easily drown in the fast-moving waters that sweep unexpectedly down Albuquerque’s arroyos and ditches this time of year.

The city of Albuquerque even offers free passes to its community swimming pools to help children fight the temptations these occasional waterways pose.

Yet it seems like each year at least one person gets caught up in the strong currents, sometimes struggling for miles before rescuers can attempt to save them. Fortunately, more often than not, the person is rescued. But rescuers put their own lives at risk doing so.

So, again: Even if they don’t look like it, arroyos and ditches are dangerous places. Please stay out of them.
