Offensive lineman Price reinstated to the Lobos

Jamal Price, a senior offensive tackle, has been reinstated to the University of New Mexico football team after being accepted into the Bernalillo County District Attorney’s Pre-Prosecution Probation Program.

Price was arrested late last month after an altercation with his girlfriend, UNM women’s basketball player Khadijah Shumpert. Price was charged with breaking and entering and conspiracy to commit breaking and entering. No domestic violence charges were filed.

He was then suspended from the team by coach Bob Davie.

“I know Jamal has had no prior incidents here at UNM at all,” Davie said after Monday’s practice. “Hopefully, Jamal has learned a valuable lesson. He has taken full accountability for what happened.

“He has a demanding set of criteria that he has to fill (in the Pre-Prosecution Probation Program), so there’s no wiggle room for him. He stepped up and took it like a man, and it’s good to have him back. He’s an experienced player.”

Price was not made available for comment Monday. His term of probation is for a period of 12 to 24 months, according to a UNM news release. If he completes it, the charges will be dismissed.

Price, 6-foot-6, 330 pounds, from Pomfret, Md., started 10 games at right guard last season. He’s a likely starter this season but will be challenged by true freshman Aaron Jenkins, who has taken most of the preseason repetitions at that position.

Last week, Davie reinstated running back Crusoe Gongbay and cornerback SaQwan Edwards after charges of rape and kidnapping charges against them were dismissed.

“You go around this country,” Davie said, “whether it’s college football, whether it’s on campuses in general, whether it’s in your community, things happen. No one can guarantee that things won’t happen, but the thing you can guarantee is how you react to them.

“I’m proud of our football team. I’m proud of what we’ve been able to do here off the field. I think we’re a disciplined football program.”
