Albuquerque police warn of Craigslist scam

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Albuquerque police are warning the public about a scam that has popped up here that could swindle would-be renters out of money.

Police spokesman Tanner Tixier said local residents have lost money by finding a rental property through the website and agreeing to pay someone who claims to own the property through Money Gram or Western Union. The fraudster typically claims to be out of town and unable to meet.

Renters then wire the money and then try to move into a home, only to discover that they don’t have access and have been swindled out of their money, Tixier said. He said the fraudsters re-publish actual advertisements with their own contact information instead.

Police recommend meeting with the homeowner in person before signing a rental agreement and, especially, before sending them any money.
