Pitching In: Miller dealerships donate $18,000

The Larry H. Miller dealerships in Albuquerque – which include LHM Chrysler Jeep Dodge Albuquerque, LHM Hyundai, LHM American Toyota, LHM Toyota Albuquerque and LHM Southwest Hyundai – delivered $18,000 in donations to four local nonprofit organizations earlier this summer.

Donations were made through Larry H. Miller Charities, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that gives back to the communities where the Larry H. Miller Group of Cos. does business.

Here are descriptions of the charities and details on how the donations will be used:

• El Ranchito de Los Ninos: A $5,000 grant toward the educational needs for its foster children. It currently houses 13 children between the ages of 2 to 18. Its mission is to keep brothers and sisters together, and to give siblings a stable and loving home. To learn more, go to

• Basket of Hope: A $5,000 donation toward gift baskets for long-term pediatric patients. The baskets are filled with age-appropriate and gender-specific toys, games, books, crafts, movies, preloaded MP3 players and more. The baskets also contain personalized “capes of hope” and handmade blankets. Visit

• Youth Development Inc. of New Mexico: A $5,000 gift toward the Computer Clubhouse. YDI’s clubhouse is designed to give youth ages 8-18 access to computer technology. Mentors work with each individual to explore ideas, nurture their talents and build self-esteem through the use of technology. The clubhouse is equipped with computers, including a robotics computer that contains several computer programs, and a music and recording studio. Visit

• PB&J Family Services: A $3,000 donation to help with transportation of families to the therapeutic preschool in Bernalillo. The facility assists the most vulnerable, neediest and isolated families to receive services that otherwise are not accessible to them. Visit

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central New Mexico has been selected as a Quality Award Winner by the Nationwide Leadership Council of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America.

The local agency is being recognized for providing excellent service to its volunteers, children and the families whom it serves.

“We are honored to receive this award in a very challenging year. We are proud of our staff and board’s dedication to quality and positive outcomes,” Chief Executive Officer Angela Reed Padilla said in a statement.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central New Mexico was selected for having met the following criteria in 2013:

• Community-based 12-month retention rate of 64 percent.

• Match support completed, 95 percent.

Each of these benchmarks demonstrates the local agency’s commitment to providing long-lasting, high-quality mentoring relationships to the children it serves, as well as providing a rewarding volunteer experience to the mentors who agree to be part of the program, the agency said.

“Receiving this award is validation that many of the program enhancements we have made are improving the quality of the services we provide to the children of Central New Mexico,” said Kristen Erickson, program manager.

PNM aids nonprofits to trim energy use

Nonprofits that want to complete energy-saving projects should apply for the PNM Reduce Your Use Grants before Sept. 19.

Qualified organizations may receive up to $5,000 to put their energy-saving ideas into action.

Previous recipients have used the grants to replace inefficient windows, upgrade lighting or replace older appliances.

Most nonprofit groups struggle with the same challenge: finding enough money to finance their missions. Reduce Your Use Grants helps nonprofits put more money into their mission by taking care of their energy concerns and reducing the amount they need to spend on electricity.

“PNM Reduce Your Use Grants, paired with rebate programs, can make a significant difference for any nonprofit organization,” said Jennifer Scacco, project manager of PNM Community Relations, in a statement. “This is just one of the many easy and effective programs designed to help our customers save money and energy.”
