Azuma Sushi & Teppan restaurant adding second location

azumafileALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — After a decade in business — and some really busy nights at the flagship San Mateo location — the owners of Azuma Sushi & Teppan are ready to expand.

Azuma will open a second restaurant at the Northeast corner of Paseo del Norte and Wyoming, near the Smith’s and Office Max.

Anna Zhang, whose family owns the restaurant, said the weekend wait for a table at the original Azuma at 4701 San Mateo NE can reach an hour, sometimes two when things are really busy. The hope is that a second location can alleviate some of the pressure.

“We want to seat right away,” she said. “Who wants to go to a restaurant and wait forever?”

At about 6,000 square feet, the new location is similar in size to the San Mateo space and can seat more than 250.

The food will remain the same, though Zhang said the new location will have a bar and incorporate new technology. Servers will use mobile devices designed make ordering and payment more efficient.

Renovation already has begun on Azuma’s new location at 8104 Wyoming NE and the goal is to open by this fall.
