Field of 9 horses to race All American Futurity

RUIDOSO DOWNS – The $2.6 million All American Futurity, the richest 2-year-old horse race in North America, will be run today at Ruidoso Downs.

The Grade 1 race is 440 yards and is scheduled to go off at 5:52 p.m. The first post time for today’s card is 1 p.m.

Here’s a look at the field in post position order:

1. APOLLITICAL BLOOD (trainer Juan Aleman, jockey Raul Valenzuela): The colt ran fifth in the Ed Burke Million Futurity in June. Aleman won the Champion of Champions with Apollitical Blood’s sire Apollitical Jess. Odds: 5-1.

2. BODACIOUS EAGLE (Blane Wood, Cody Jensen): The gelding was third in the Ruidoso Futurity and had trouble at the start of the Rainbow Futurity, but managed a fourth-place finish. Odds: 7-2.

3. JM MIRACLE (Umberto Belloc, Ramon Sanchez): The Ruidoso Futurity runner-up was bumped and pinched at the start of the Rainbow Futurity and ran eighth. Odds: 4-1.

4. TEMPTING DESTINY (Michael Joiner, G.R. Carter Jr.): The gelding’s ownership includes Mark Allen and Leonard Blach of Mine That Bird fame. Carter is quarter horse racing’s all-time leading rider. Odds: 6-1.

5. MAD ABOUT THE MOON (Gene Burden, Sergio Becerra Jr.): The New Mexico-bred gelding was bought by David Valdez for $5,000 at the Ruidoso yearling sale. Odds: 20-1.

6. SAM CROW: (Blane Wood, Ricky Ramirez): The gray gelding won his All American trial by two lengths. He also won a Rainbow trial, but didn’t qualify for the final. Odds: 15-1.

7. THIS FIRE IS COLD: (Umberto Belloc, Esgar Ramirez): The filly broke her maiden with a win in the All American trials. Ramirez won the 2010 All American aboard 22-1 Mr Piloto. Odds: 20-1.

8. EXQUISITE STRIDE (Eddie Willis, Jimmy Dean Brooks): The colt was the fastest qualifier on the second day of trials with a 21.336 clocking. He won by 1¼ lengths in his second career start. Odds: 8-1.

9. THUNDERBALL B (Michael Joiner, Joe Badilla Jr.) : The gelding was the fastest qualifier on the first day of trials with a time of 21.336 seconds. The trial was his third start and first win. Odds: 20-1.

10. IM A FANCY PYC (Paul Jones, Eduardo Nicascio): The colt will be scratched and retired after sustaining an injury during his 4¼-length win in the trials. Odds: 5-2.

NOTES: No Secrets Here owns the fastest All American Futurity clocking at 440 yards with a time of 20.886 time in 2006.

… Special Effort won the 1981 All American by a stakes record 3¼ lengths.

… The first All American Futurity was in 1959 with a purse of $129,686.

… Refrigerator, who went on to become a two-time World Champion, won the race in 1990, running 400 yards in 19.39 seconds.
