ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — New Mexico State Police say a semi-trailer struck and killed a bicyclist Saturday evening on US 54 near the Three Rivers petroglyph site near Tularosa.
Police will release the cyclist’s name pending notification of next of kin.
According to State Police, he died of severe head injuries at an Alamogordo hospital. The initial investigation, officials said, show that the man was traveling southbound near mile post 100 on the west shoulder. As the semi passed the cyclist, the driver swiped the bicycle, forcing the rider to lose control and fall. He was then struck by the front passenger wheel of the truck.
The crash was still under investigation Sunday, but police say it does not appear that alcohol and drugs were a factor.
